Assigned by the Swedish Parliament, the Swedish National Audit Office (NAO) manages a multifaceted international development cooperation with supreme audit institutions in several developing countries. The purpose is to contribute to democratic development and enhanced parliamentary oversight.

The cooperation between the Swedish NAO and the Office of the Auditor General Zimbabwe (OAG) was extended earlier this year. Since then, the conditions for public sector auditing has changed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Swedish NAO has explored alternative ways of supporting OAG.

This has resulted in the cooperation with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Zimbabwe, with the purpose of strengthen parliamentary oversight and public sector auditing. The cooperation was presented today at a digital ceremony with the two auditor generals and the management of UNDP Zimbabwe.

– The pandemic is causing additional challenges for our colleagues in Zimbabwe. Our intention is to adjust our support to the current situation to enable OAG to carry out their important mandate as well as possible, says the Swedish Auditor General Mrs Helena Lindberg.

The Swedish NAO now contributes USD 200,000 to UNDP. The contribution will be used to support identified audits, aiming at improved accountability, effectiveness and transparency in the use of public funds. Resources will also be used to strengthen OAGs audit capacities.

The new cooperation is well in line with Sweden’s development strategy for Zimbabwe, which – among other things – aims at improved democratic governance, reduced corruption and accountability in public institutions.

– We are happy that this cooperation could be quickly established, largely thanks to the good relations between OAG, the Parliament and UNDP, says Catharina Cappelin, Deputy Auditor General responsible for international affairs at the Swedish NAO.
