Swedish NAO extends cooperation with GAC Liberia

The Swedish National Audit Office has decided to extend the cooperation with the General Auditing Commission of Liberia (GAC). The purpose is to further improve the possibilities of conducting audits in accordance with international standards.

Assigned by the Swedish Parliament, the Swedish NAO manages an extensive international development cooperation with supreme audit institutions in several countries. The purpose is to contribute to democratic development and enhanced parliamentarian oversight.

The Swedish NAO has, as part of this work, cooperated with the supreme audit institution of Liberia, the General Auditing Commission (GAC) since September 2018. The focus has been on strengthening the GAC’s institutional capacity and capability in various aspects of quality assurance and quality control.

The Auditor General Helena Lindberg has now together with the Auditor General of Liberia, P. Garswa Jackson Sr., agreed to continue to cooperation and enter a new preparatory project phase for one year. The purpose is to explore the possibilities to widen the scope of the cooperation and agree on priorities.

At the sub-regional organization AFROSAI-E’s annual meeting, held in Banjul, the Gambia, the two Auditors General have signed a letter of intent, marking the continued commitment for the cooperation.

”GAC operates with limited resources in a challenging context, by continuing the cooperation and open up the possibility to provide a broader support, we hope to contribute to strengthen the possibilities for qualified auditing activities, transparency and accountability” says Auditor General Helena Lindberg.

The international operations of the Swedish National Audit Office

The Swedish National Audit Office conducts a wide range of international operations. The Swedish National Audit Office represents Sweden in international contexts and is instructed by the Riksdag, within the context of Swedish development cooperation, to support development of supreme audit institutions in other countries. Currently, the Swedish National Audit Office is active in bilateral cooperation projects in Armenia, Kenya, Kosovo, Liberia, Moldova, Palestine, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. In addition, the Swedish National Audit Office is involved in five regional partnerships targeting 43 Supreme Audit Institutions in the Western Balkans, Africa, South-East Asia. and the Pacific region.
