Follow-up of our audits
The Swedish National Audit Office produces knowledge about central government for others to use. Our findings form the basis for debate and decisions on changes in key issues in society, affecting citizens, organisations and businesses. To find out whether our audits and recommendations have led to improvements, we always follow up on the effects of our audit reports.
When we audit annual reports, we examine whether the government agencies have worked to resolve problems that we identified the previous year. Our audits of the effectiveness and efficiency of central government initiatives often concern complex problems that may take several years to remedy. This is why we follow up on them after four to five years. Then, we examine how the Government and government agencies have worked to address misstatements and deficiencies and whether they have succeeded.
Our audits lead to improvements
In most cases, the Government and government agencies make efforts to resolve the problems that we have reported. We work to ensure that misstatements and deficiencies do not occur, and we find that we are successful. Only 6% of the government agencies’ accounts contain misstatements that we must report. Often, our audits lead to changes in the longer term.
We follow up on our auditing in two reports that we submit to the Riksdag:
Annual Report of the Auditor General
In this report, the Auditor General gathers their most important findings and reflections of the year
Follow-up report
In our follow-up report, we investigate whether previous years’ audits have contributed to better central government activities.
