International Development Cooperation
The purpose of the Swedish National Audit Office’s engagement in international development cooperation projects is to support the independence of supreme audit institutions and thereby contribute to transparency, democratic development and strengthening of parliamentary control in different parts of the world. Currently, we run projects mainly in Africa and Southeast Europe.
Cooperation projects
Our cooperation projects include activities related to our partner's legal framework, strategic development, leadership and the development of manuals and guidelines for public audit. A typical project activity is support to carry out new auditing methods through coaching and practical guidance.
Normally we engage a number of colleagues from the Swedish NAO to join a specific project- or country team as short term consultants. These teams have special responsibility for planning, staffing and carrying-through of project activities. We also have thematically arranged working groups for exchange of experience as well as coordination and development of auditing methods.
Points of departure for the international development cooperation
Within the International Development Cooperation we focus on long-term cooperation projects to support institutional and professional capacity building of our partner institutions. Our point of departure is to support reforms and strategies that guide the development of our partner institutions. Internationally accepted auditing standards (ISSAIs) and good auditing practice is always in the centre of attention when it comes to our development activities.

Objective and financing
The project activities are financed by a grant from the Swedish Riksdag (Parliament) every year. This grant is to cover international development cooperation work according to the objectives and orientation of Swedish political efforts for global development and international development cooperation.
The Swedish National Office will carry out its International Development Cooperation according to the following objective:
To contribute to the strengthening of capacity and ability of Supreme Audit Institutions to conduct audits in accordance with international standards.
Results
Every four years, the Swedish National Audit Office reports to Parliament on the results of its international development cooperation, through which developing countries receive support in developing their capacity and ability to conduct public audits and to strengthen parliamentary control. This year's report, covering the years 2019-2022 reported results achieved primarily based on external evaluations, but also on our own assessments. The report shows that progress is being made and results are being achieved in the different projects.
